Why the person’s story matters

Every person who walks through our doors brings not just pain, but a story, and that story often tells us more than any scan or diagnosis ever could.

In the last few weeks, I’ve met people whose pain journeys have been completely different from what you’d ever read in a textbook.

During university, we’re taught to fit people into neat diagnostic boxes, one condition, one cause, one solution. It all seems so predictable and linear on paper.

But when you start working with real people, you quickly learn that life isn’t neat. Two people can have the same diagnosis and experience pain in completely different ways.

Why? Because pain isn’t just about structures, it’s about the person living inside them. Their sleep, stress, beliefs, support network, and experiences all shape how pain is felt and how recovery unfolds.

That’s why listening to someone’s story matters so much more than finding the perfect label.

A diagnosis is part of the picture and we don’t ignore this, but the real work begins when we understand what’s important to the person sitting in front of us.

Sometimes, the most powerful part of recovery starts when someone finally feels heard.
