Barbells and Beyond

Supervised Strength Training for Women 40 to 60

What is Barbells and Beyond?

Barbells & Beyond is a supervised small group strength training program designed for women aged approximately 40 to 60 who want to build confidence using gym based strength training in a safe and supportive environment.

The program uses a wide range of gym equipment including barbells, dumbbells, machines, and other strength training tools.

The focus is on learning how to strength train safely and confidently through perimenopause and beyond, with an emphasis on understanding movement, building confidence, and progressing gradually.

How does the program work?

Barbells & Beyond follows a structured process to ensure the program is appropriate and supportive for each participant.

Initial screening and assessment
Participants complete an initial assessment with a physiotherapist. Where appropriate, this may also involve a pelvic health physiotherapist. This helps determine whether the program is suitable for your individual needs and circumstances.

Entry into the program
If the program is appropriate, you will enter the Barbells & Beyond small group sessions. All sessions are supervised by a physiotherapist and focus on learning technique, understanding equipment, and building confidence over time.

Independent gym access
The program includes a 2 month gym membership. This allows you to attend the gym independently between supervised sessions and practise what you are learning in a supported environment.

What do the sessions involve?

Sessions are run in small groups and supervised by a physiotherapist.

They focus on:

Learning how to use gym equipment safely

Understanding strength training principles

Gradual and appropriate progression

Building confidence and independence

Individual guidance and modification where needed

The program is designed to support learning and capability rather than pushing limits.

Education and Support

Barbells & Beyond also includes education relevant to strength training through perimenopause.
